What is plagiarism and how can I avoid it?



The unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work.(dictionary.com)

There are different forms of Plagiarism. One example is copying someone else’s original work without authorization or without giving them the proper credit.  It is also plagiarism when we use someone’s original idea, even if we explain them in similar words or even change the words but keep their idea.

Plagiarism is done through text, Images, Sound files, Movie clips, and other video files. 

 If there is something that is common knowledge, we do not need to attribute it to a certain person.

Example of Plagiarism:      To be or not to be, that is the question.

f I just include this in my essay, without attributing it to Shakespeare, I am plagiarizing

Here is an example of an Idea that you can’t plagiarize:      Apples are red

Even if Shakespeare said this, it doesn’t matter because it is something that is common knowledge.
